Amedeo Clemente Modigliani was an Italian Jewish painter and sculptor who was born in Livorono, Italy in 1884. He was well known for his simplified and elongated forms.
His parents raised him and his three siblings in impoverished condition as they were money changers. He was a sickly child and was being tutored at home by his mother who taught him literature, art and philosophy which made him developed a strong passion later towards these subjects.
After his recovery, his mother arranged for him to study painting with Guglielmo Micheli who gave him instructions on classical art.
By 1900, he was contracted with tuberculosis and interrupted in his studies.

Amedeo Modigliani moved to Paris in 1906, and it was at this time it became the avant-grade centre of Europe. He furthered his artistic skills by often visiting many museums at Rome and Naples inspire of frequently being weak.
Though there were many artist who were already outshining their talent at that time, but he had his own style which can be seen on his sculptors and paintings during that period.
He settle in an artist commune in the Montmarte section of the city while he studied at Académie Colarossi. There was an influence of many French painters such as Paul Cézzane and Henri de Toilouse-Lautrec. He then became associated with other artists such as Jaun Gris and Pablo Picasso where he evolved into a more unique and bold from a traditional artist. With an evolution, he rejected artistic convention, and intake alcohol and drugs and became involve in a number of love affairs.
Despite the prolific output, he was often force to exchange his works for basic necessity since several of his paintings did not generate a widespread interest. He was however save from the utterly destitution when a doctor name Paul Alexandre appeared in many of his portraits. In 1909, a sculptor name Constantin Bráncusi, bolstered his prospects by introducing him to tribal art.
With the eruption of World War 1 in 1914, he faces another period of difficulty as his poor health was perpetually aggravated with his continuous use of substance abuse and love life. But, it was also during this time he produced some of his finest work of art.
He returned to portrait paintings by bringing in the geometric abstraction and bold lines which he had mastered in his sculptures. In his portraits, he featured women who passed through his life, people from his neighbourhood with bold lines that were very simple and maslike faces that were evocative and flat.
